It's great to do food drives and volunteer at food pantries and soup kitchens, but we also need to:

• Support the Food Stamp program by telling our legislators to simplify the process of applying, let more working families qualify for food stamps, increase the benefits, and let all hungry people be eligible

(see California Hunger Action Coalition www.hungeraction.net and sign up for Hunger Action Day)

• Remove the reasons that we need either private charity or government programs by encouraging policies that create jobs and demanding employers to pay living wages:

See www.letjusticeroll.org

American Friends Service Committee www.afsc.org/economic-justice/

Coalition on Human Needs www.chn.org

• Encourage schools to offer the School Breakfast program and Summer Food program, and include healthier foods in the programs

See California Food Policy Advocates www.cfpa.net

• Bring food prices down for everybody by buying local products from farmer's markets, participating in food cooperatives, and growing some of our own food in community gardens

See Sustainable Economic Enterprises of LA www.see-la.org

South Central Farm www.southcentralfarmers.com

LA Community Garden Council www.lanlt.org (scroll down on menu on left side)

• Demand that public transportation serve the needs of low income people, and that supermarkets in our area are clean and meet local needs

http://www.chc-inc.org/ (scroll down to CHC  In the News)

• Protect programs that serve the elderly and disabled, and outreach to others about them: Home Delivered Meals, Congregate Meals, and Brown Bag

• Fight unjust laws that prevent groups from feeding homeless persons in public

• Break down barriers between "food providers" and "food recipients" when we do participate in charitable food giving. We are all on the same side, fighting poverty
